Ruby Keeler on the set of “Flirtation Walk,” 1935
So last night was Joan Blondell night on TCM, so guess what that meant? Busby Berkeley films! I turned it on to Footlight Parade, which is oookay… But later they were playing Dames! I’m not sure if they played Gold Diggers (1933) but that one’s my favorite and she was definitely in that.
Blondell is one of those actresses that you know but you never hear about. She was huge in her time, so it’s strange more people don’t bring her up? I don’t know but look at Dick Powell, he’s so charming! He was adorrrrabbbleeee in Dames!! And Ruby Keeler there too :)
Chorus girls in 42nd Street (1933), featuring Ginger Rogers as Anytime Annie.
how fetching does Ginger look in her clearly standout dance rehearsal shorts, stripe suspenders, and beribboned button-up blouse? I love how, even in supporting roles, she manages to steal the show, fashion- and personality-wise (even from the supposedly ever magnetic Ruby Keeler…but Annie is a more saucy character than ingenue Peggy anyway, so it’s not like Ruby could do much about it.) I also love Ginge’s whimsically patterned black and white dancing shoes (or rather, Mystery Dark Color and white? who knows.)
I WILL admit: Ruby Keeler’s puffed sleeves and Una Merkel’s high-waisted, side-buttoning, wide-legged trousers (LOVE. THOSE) are giving Ginger’s suspenders + shoes combo a run for her money. but that is IT. the rest of the chorus gals and their dancewear style are nothing compared to her.
